Jon Landau, the producer of both Avatar films, claims that the sketch helped to keep Avatar relevant during production of the second film. Its use in the film was highlighted in a Saturday Night Live sketch featuring Ryan Gosling, which also mentioned that it is widely used for Shakira merchandise, hookah bars, and off-brand tea companies. In the movie Avatar, the typeface is used in the title and subtitles. It was also used in the episode credits and end credits of the first four seasons of Samurai Jack. Papyrus has been used in numerous TV show opening credits such as Medium (2005–2011) and Eureka (2006–2012). In 2008, a website named "Papyrus Watch" was created for documenting the typeface's ubiquity and misusage. The criticism towards the typeface is similar to that of Comic Sans. Over the years, Papyrus has gained infamy for its omnipresence in graphic design, usually in situations for which it was not intended. macOS includes Papyrus font as part of its basic installation (starting with version 10.3 Panther, released in 2003). Papyrus has been included in many Microsoft programs for Windows. Its differences include a shorter, sharper capital P, a capital E with a top bar longer than the middle bar, and a swash A. It's way overused." In any case, Costello claims "it was not my intent (for it) to be used for everything. Costello sold the rights for the font for $750 (equivalent to $2,300 in 2022), and as of 2017, states he still receives "very low" royalty payments despite its inclusion since 2000 on all personal computers using a Mac or Microsoft operating system. ITC, the current owner of the typeface, describes it as an "unusual roman typeface effectively merges the elegance of a traditional roman letterform with the hand-crafted look of highly skilled calligraphy". Papyrus has a number of distinctive characteristics, including rough edges, irregular curves, and high horizontal strokes in the capitals. Costello released the font the following year alongside Letraset. Costello described his goal as a font that would represent what English language texts would have looked like if written on papyrus 2000 years ago. He hand-drew the font over a period of six months by means of calligraphy pen and textured paper. He had been studying the Bible and came onto the idea of what a written font would have looked like in biblical times in the Middle East. Created in 1982 and released by Linotype, it has a number of distinctive characteristics, including rough edges, irregular curves, and high horizontal strokes in the capitals.Ĭostello created the font in 1982, when he was 23 years old and just out of college. “I had no idea it would take off like this.Papyrus is a widely available typeface designed by Chris Costello, a graphic designer, illustrator, and web designer. He also reveals he sold the font for $750 and “very low” royalty payments. Chris says: “It was not my intent to have it used for everything. In the film, Gosling is haunted by sightings of the font on “hookah bars, Shakira merch and off-brand teas”. With that broad range I began to see it everywhere, mortgage ads, construction logos, it got out of control.” “I sold the rights and it ended up being with the font set on every computer in the world. “I was thinking very earthy, Middle Eastern, almost hieroglyphics,” he explains. The CBS interviewer asks Chris why his design is considered one of the most hated fonts, and he says at the time he believed it was well thought out. “This man, this… professional graphic designer. ![]() ![]() “He just got away with it,” he continues. In the sketch, Ryan Gosling describes Avatar’s typeface choice as a random selection, “like a thoughtless child just wandering by a garden, yanking leaves along the way”. I just started scribbling this alphabet… and ended up developing the entire font set.” I was studying the bible and looking for God and this font came to mind… thinking about Biblical times, Egypt and the Middle East. “I designed it when I was 23, right out of college. “I had no idea it would end up on every computer in the world,” says the graphic designer during the video interview, which you can watch here. Now the film has gone viral, Chris Costello, the original designer of the font, has spoken to CBS News in reaction. Starring Ryan Gosling as Steven, a man tormented by the use of the Papyrus font on the Avatar logo, the three-minute sketch tears the design choice to shreds in brilliant satire. This weekend’s Saturday Night Live featured a sketch that resonated with design fans around the world. ![]()
